It's All About Communication

The First Post!

Howdy! That’s me, Curtis, in the giant photo above, sitting on a rustic, paint-chipped deck in the remote wilderness of Montana, doing what I love to do: write. I’m not from Montana and I’m not writing this post in that picture, but it seemed as good a photo of me as any to get this blog started. At least…the picture is recent. It’s a selfie of me I took this past summer while attending a faculty fellowship to start a new book. But that’s for another blog post.

Today, I’m simply dropping a few words into the blog say that I’m here and I’m excited to finally launch this website! The Comm Spot has sort of been in my head, in one way or another, for over a decade, but now felt like the time to finally make it come to life. This website is, in many ways, a much more refined (and organized!) version of my first website— TheVisualCommunicationGuy.com—which I launched, somewhat haphazardly, in 2013. I plan to make this website (which officially launched in August 2025) will prove to be far more robust—and useful—as it lives on in the years ahead.

So…why a website about communication?

I mean, the short answer is I’m a nerd and, to truly nerd out about what I love, building a website in homage to communication seemed…a worthwhile endeavor. More to the point, though, I’ve been studying and practicing and teaching and researching communication for the better part of my life. I’ve been incredibly blessed and grateful to simultaneously work as a professor, a consultant, a designer, an author, and a speaker and I’ve had the opportunity to, quite literally, travel the world doing it. Building a website (and blog!) to share some of the things I’ve learned seems not only fun and rewarding, but for me, it’s a fun way I can give back.

I’ve also discovered in my various roles as university professor, corporate speaker and consultant, and community volunteer, that communication is a subject that many people are both passionate about and…have a lot of questions about. Whether they be questions about how to improve emotional intelligence, how to negotiate for a raise, or how to install a new font, questions about communication are as diverse as they are important and interesting. My hope is that this website can, in some small way, provide a hub for asking those very questions.

What’s next?

I have a million ideas, so please keep checking back as I build new pages, more content, downloadable resources, and useful products. But also…please let me know what you’d like to see! Reach out to me through the contact form and let me know what other kinds of resources will be most useful.

Onward!
